Thanks, Jason, for giving us lots to think about. I like you calling us “standard-issue human beings”–I think most of us tend to think of ourselves as in some way different from ‘normal,’ whatever that means, and need to be reminded of what we fundamentally are.

We use the IDI a lot for benchmarking and guiding the design of our intercultural programs, Jason. I very much enjoyed being reminded of some of Milton Bennett’s wise words, as well as your insight: “The sentiment that ‘we’re all the same’ sounds much better if ‘they’ are the same as ‘we,’ but not vice versa.” Very true. And as you said, this is not ‘bad’ but just honest. It’s very hard and uncomfortable to behave/think/assume/react/expect in ways that are different than the way we are used to or have been brought up and conditioned to.
